I’ve enjoyed quite numerous forms of art with the help of todays technology. It’s the same technology that evolves art especially the younger mediums such as movies and videogames. As they technology brings both medium closer to replicate real life, the creators leaves little room for imagination in the audience. Let’s review and compare some arts and how room for imagination enhances the audience experience

Videogames

Games is a form of art. It inspires and touches the heart of the player. I’ve lived in an era where games has evolved quite rapidly due to the advent of video gaming. Video games has evolved from tiny bits of pixels into millions of polygons on screen. The advancement in 3D rendering technologies and the up and coming Virtual Reality set has brought games closer into mimicking or “enhancing” reality.

But do we need games to be very realistic ?

There has been countless of comments on the internet that some big tittle video games now focusses on graphics instead of gameplay. Another trend I see is the re release of old games into newer platforms such as mobile phones, some which offers little to no improvement to graphics and music.

This Video illustrates the gameplay of one of my favorite video games

Limited animations, sound palette and colors was enough to make me excited. I often recall how I imagine the characters doing so much more. It’s another movie playing inside my head.

Theater play

I watch theater plays on several occasions, from the local theater all the way to broadway. The limitations on plays are spaces, movement and effects. Theres no lens that to be changed, everything should be perfect from every angle, they require stunning synchronisation between each players requiring rigorous training. But one thing theater has yet to manage is the complete realization of the environment. Yet again such things are not necessary, the audiences imagination will fill in the blanks with their own personal touch. One might imagine the grass are bright green or golden brown. But each audience experience is truly unique and personal

Movies

The advancement of special effects in movies, leaves little room for imagination. The creator has 100% control over how the art, visual and sound is perceived by the audience. Advancement such as 4D cinemas brings more sensory experience to the audience, yet how about the human emotion ? What happened to all the good stories, meaningful camera movements and  character expressions ? Call me old, but I felt all those are replaced by special effects, flamboyant glamorous shots, pretty actors and actresses talking. I learn to appreciate old movies right now and how the audience need to interpret character movements and expression.

Room for imagination provides a unique experience for the audience, I do hope modern mediums of art and it’s creators leave gaps and room for the audience to add their personal touch to the experience. After all who wouldn’t want their art to be enjoyed by many ?

On that note.

Selamat hari Kartini!

For quite some time music has been a bastion to keep my emotions and mood in check.
New songs heals me in some ways.

Recently I found Nano, and her (yes her) song “Be Free (with music)” really caught me on this taught on what music have done for me all this time.  On that note I’d like to share her song..

Nano – Be Free (With Music)

Even in the middle of nowhere,
If you want to, you can get somewhere
Listen, listen to my voice.
Sing a song and the heavenly notes
May be falling with the seed of hope
Let you, let you rejoice.

Everyday,
Through thick walls, over broad rivers,
Music always gets it over and reaches out to you.
Remember it,
For bad grief, for deep sorrow,
Little melodies will give the greatest cure, it’s true.

So try it out,
Whenever you are, we can sing a harmony.
Wherever you are, we can play a symphony.
Once you find your own part in tune, now
We are hand in hand.
Imagination joining and takes you to high flight.
Can’t you just feel it?
Yes, you’ll be free, so free to be, no limit,
Be free with music.

(Break free from chains you’ve been falling in
Get back the dreams you have given in
Don’t stop yourself from believing in
All the possibilities you’re living in)

Surely we are under the same air.
If you want to you get keys to share.
Open, open your blind mind.
Sing a song in the bluish sky,
Melodies will show you how to fly.
Let me, let me remind you.

Everyday,
On high clouds, across borders,
Music always gets it over and reaches out to you.
Remember it,
For sad tears, for tomorrow,
Little melodies will give the greatest cure, it’s true.

Feel the world inside of you.
No more loneliness, we’ll never get
Heal the world. You know you can.

(Break free from chains you’ve been falling in
Get back the dreams you have given in
Don’t stop yourself from believing in
All the possibilities you’re living in)

Whenever you are, you can lose the gravity.
Wherever you are, you can stay in unity.
Once you find music all around you,
We are hand in hand.
Imagination that joins us and leads you to the light.
Can’t you just see it?
Yes, you’ll be free, so free to be, no limit,
Be yourself.

Whenever you are, we can sing a harmony.
Wherever you are, we can play a symphony.
Once you find your own part in tune, now
We are hand in hand.
Imagination that joins us and takes you to high flight.
Can’t you just feel it?
Yes, you’ll be free, so free to be, no limit,
Be free with music.

A new business starts in a matter of days. One would say it’s a cafe, one would say it’s a store. But we know it’s neither of those.

Folks is a co-gaming space. An open community where people connect through games and fun. Where people play games like the old ways of gathering on a table and spending hours on it.

Games has gone through its evolution throughout the decades. But I always remembered the old days where Internet was not abundant as it is today. The efforts we took to meet each other, hauling those CRT tv’s connecting multiple controler through special adapters. Gaming was more relational. Today the abundance of Internet has created the layer of anonymity bringing another layer to human behavior.

On a short holiday trip one of my best friend brought up the topic on community service. Before obtaining his law degree he went to school in Singapore and one of the requirement to pass his high school was 1000 hours of community service.

He commented that the law in Indonesia still follows the old dutch system in regards to punishment. Initially there are only two kinds of punishment in Indonesia, jail time and fine with the recent addition of capital punishment which has been the topic of international debate of recent.

Today was the last class of my MBA.

On the last class my lecturer talked about Bank Perkreditan Rakyat. A small bank which loans up to 1 Million rupiah the rough equivalent of US$ 100 at the time of writing. The debtors are usually people on rural areas, and some of the BPR only lend to women living in poverty. I’ve read the case study of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh founded by M. Yunus a couple semester back, but hearing how it works in Indonesia are quite different and personal.

A lady borrowed Rp. 100.000,- ($10) from the loan sharks, bought a couple hands of banana, carry it over to the market and sells it for a profit of Rp.50.000,- to Rp. 60.000,- ($5-$6). They give back to the creditor Rp.130.000 ($13) to the creditor only keeping only Rp.20.000 to Rp.30.000 ($2-$3)

It’s has almost been two years since I’ve joined the Executive MBA program and as the program is at its final stretch, It’s time for me to reflect on what I’ve learned. I’ve learned from prominent teachers and practitioners in the field of business teaching in front of the class every saturday. The bulk of my knowledge however came from the person sitting besides me. My peers are a collection of people who worked in different field who had their mettle tested. Their both young at heart and have their own wisdom to share. It’s been a pleasure studying with them.

As I studied the course I’ve reflected on my past jobs and businesses. I learned where I did right and wrong, and factors that I could’ve control and couldn’t control. I learned how to run it more efficiently, manage resources and new strategies. I remembered as business rise and fall, went through hurdles, restructured and dissolved.

Money, factories, skilled workers are assets. That’s what the books, teachers and practitioners taught you. I found those things as tools to achieve your goals. Money can be borrowed, factories can be rent and skilled workers can be hired.

The biggest asset you can have is sincerity.

Without it you lose the big picture, the purpose of your goal. Without sincerity you are just wasting your time. Sincerity gives you the extra drive to work through those long hours. Sincerity gives you the motivation to rise up from failure. Sincerity enables you to do your best every single time.

Nobody can guarantee what you do will succeed or fail. But with sincerity you do so without fear and regret.

Thanks for all the lesson friends

I rarely went to a pasar in my life, yes I’ve been to a few wet markets when there is a need to buy something (mostly garments) but never have I been to a pasar due to the buzz it’s generating

The upper floor of pasar santa has now been the domain of unique speciality shop. Youngster that many would label “hipster” flock to this place for it’s unique communal atmosphere. Shops tend to be tended (no pun intended) by the owners them self, creating a personal relation with their customers.

One shop I visited was Bear & Co, which promotes it’s speciality Nitrogen Coffee, the store operated solely by josh is a popup store that opens quite irregularly. Customers will have to follow the shops Instagram to confirm it’s opening hour. The shop runs on an honor system where the customer pays and take changes from the box as the owner said “I’m imposing a little math here”. Shops are openly accepts food and beverages other shops as long as we clean up after our selves.

Another shop I visited was co-owned by a friend of mine and specialized in Cajon which can be custom made. One the of the shop owner Putra has been in the business of making and selling Cajon for four years. Now he sells mainly cajon for beginners which are priced with budget in mind to lower the barrier of entry of would be cajon players.

While many shops are closed during the week days mainly to their pop-up nature, I managed to quickly browse the upper floor to find speciality stores, barbers, small coffee shops in which one was the famous pioneer of that place (ABCD) and speciality foods that at times sold out very quickly.

Regardless of the “hipster” demography that some older generation find “weird” or annoying. I find that the space for youngster to dive into entrepreneurship is a sign of progress in Indonesia. The barrier of entry into this venue is still quite achievable for the young start ups who can muster their capital. Pooling the creative young into a community will hopefully boost the creative economy of this country. I do hope that more places like these pop up around the country.

This entry was written exactly a year ago, it has somehow fell out of my mind. It’s still relevant hence I decided to publish it.

H2OLiving though the modern world, we are easily exposed to foreign cultures. A lot of these cultures are adopted, giving birth to subcultures. Some examples includes Brazilian jujitsu, ballet, pastas and noodles, bread and countless more. With international trade, Internet and establishment of multinational companies, accessing these cultures are easily accommodated. This convenience however can potentially ruin a natural balance or create unhealthy habits. There are a lot of examples, but today I’m going to choose drinking as a topic.
